Welcome to Y Events Lab! This series of courses looks at developing your skills in all areas of events management, from customer service and communication, to lighting and sound. Whether you want to work in the performance industry or something completely different, there are loads of skills here that will help you with whatever you want to do.

This course focuses on Lighting for gigs, theatre and performance and is here to give you a head start or help you remember things that we will cover in practical sessions at The Y Theatre. In this first section we’re going to cover the basics, from identifying cables and lights, to rigging and understanding the different terms we use to describe lighting effects. All this will set you up, ready to start looking at different desks and how to use them, and eventually lighting an event of your own.

If there are any words in the videos or sheets that you don’t understand, don’t worry, there’s a glossary at the end of the section that has a summary of all the terms we’ve used.
